Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. At the age of five the carnival barker father died, leaving Ruth's mother with no choice but to work as a cleaning girl and waitress to feed the family. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She left the school only after two years to explore a career in acting. The route she took was not without obstacles. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines. her dream of performing in the theater she wanted eluded. While in New York, she worked at a bar, as a check-in girl before quitting before moving to Boston. In Boston, in which she was employed during the late night, she was an actor for New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time as an usherette. She took classes in drama in The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
